Motherhouse Project

What is our Motherhouse Project?

Our 24 Sisters currently make their home in the House of Loreto Nursing Home building. Besides space constrictions, the Sisters also must deal with a lack of privacy and a place for quiet prayer.

What is special about a Motherhouse?

Each Religious Congregation in the Catholic Church has a Motherhouse. It is the “Bethlehem” where the young Sisters learn to live the religious life, the “Bethany” where the Sisters in ministry can be renewed and refreshed, and the “Ephesus” where the older Sisters can live out their years in peace and dignity. The new Motherhouse will provide the essentials for a religious family — a Chapel, kitchen and dining area, infirmary and living space for 24 Sisters.

Why now?

The Congregation of the Divine Spirit was founded in Erie, PA, in 1956. For over 55 years we Sisters have also served the Diocese of Youngstown and especially the Stark County area both in our service to the senior citizens and in the teaching profession. In 2010, circumstances made it necessary to move the entire Community to the House of Loreto in Canton. We envision expanding our involvement in these missions and as more young women join the Congregation, a per- manent home separate from the nursing home has become a necessity.
